Why More Couples Are Ditching the Open Bar for an Espresso Cart
There's a shift happening in the wedding world, and most people haven't caught on yet.
Couples are rethinking the open bar. Not getting rid of it entirely (most of the time), but it's no longer the automatic centerpiece of the reception. Something else is taking that spot — and a lot of times, it's a coffee cart.
I didn't make this up. Industry data shows that nearly 35% of millennials and Gen Z adults identify as sober-curious or non-drinkers. Searches for "zero-proof weddings" are up 140%. One major UK events company reported a 28% jump in fully alcohol-free wedding requests over the last two years. Whatever you want to call it — sober-curious, dry, health conscious — it's not a niche thing anymore. It's a third of your guest list.
So what are couples doing instead? They're getting creative. And one of the most popular swaps right now is a mobile espresso bar.
Why Coffee Actually Works Here
Think about what an open bar does at a wedding. It gives guests something to do. It creates a gathering spot. It's a moment. It's part of the visual.
A coffee cart does all of that — without the $8,000 alcohol bill, the drunk uncle situation, or the energy crash at 9 p.m.
Here’s a few things working in coffee's favor:
Everyone can and enjoys drinking it. Young, old, the friend who's pregnant, the cousin in recovery, the bridesmaid who's driving home, and even the decaf lovers. Nobody gets left out holding a lukewarm Sprite while everyone else is having a moment at the bar.
It hits different at the right time. Late afternoon ceremony? Iced lattes during cocktail hour are a game-changer. Evening reception starting to drag around 9? An espresso cart wakes the dance floor back up and pairs perfectly with desserts. Send-off coming? Hand guests a hot drink for the road.
The visual carries. A real cart with a real espresso machine and a real barista pulling shots looks incredible in photos. Guests post it. Your photographer loves it. It becomes part of the story of the day.
It's Not All-or-Nothing
Here's what I want couples to actually hear: you don't have to choose.
Some of my favorite events have had a full bar AND a coffee cart. The bar handles what we have all come to expect at a wedding. The coffee cart creates something new and gives people a reset. They can run alongside each other the whole time so non-drinkers have something just as elevated to hold.
The whole point isn't "no alcohol." The point is hospitality. The point is making moments. The point is providing options for those you love. A handcrafted lavender latte from a real barista feels a lot more like care than a can of LaCroix on a folding table.
Where Nine Tenths Comes In
This is what we do.
Nine Tenths Coffee is a mobile espresso and coffee cart based here in the High Country. We roll up to weddings, private events, corporate meetings, celebrations — pretty much any moment where you want people to feel taken care of without the headache of figuring out coffee yourself.
Real espresso machine. Real baristas. Lattes, cappuccinos, americanos, cold brew, the syrups people actually want. Hot or iced. All the favorite milk options, whatever your guests need.
We handle the setup, the service, and the cleanup. You handle the rest of your day.
